(IOS) AND NASA HAVE IDENTIFIED SPECIFIC SENSING NEEDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPACESUIT GARMENT AND PLSS THAT CAN BE MET BY THE NON-INTRUSIVE OPTICAL GAS SENSOR (NIOGS) TECHNOLOGY. WE HAVE ALSO DEFINED THE PLAN TO FURTHER MATURE AND VALIDATE THE SYSTEM DEVELOPED IN PHASE II TO MEET THOSE NEEDS. AT THE END OF PHASE II, IOS WILL HAVE DEVELOPED A NIOGS PROTOTYPE AND DELIVERED IT TO NASA, AND WILL HAVE SUPPORTED NASA TESTING OF THE SYSTEM IN THE VENTILATION LOOP TEST RIG (VLTR), WHERE SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE VALIDATED. DATA RECORDED BY NASA WILL BE ANALYZED BY IOS, AND THE SYSTEM DESIGN WILL BE REVIEWED TO ADDRESS ANY LIMITATIONS OF THE NIOGS FOUND DURING THIS FIRST FUNCTIONALITY EVALUATION. Description | IGF::OT::IGF THE GAS SENSOR IN THE PLSS OF THE ISS EMU WILL MEET ITS PROJECTED LIFE IN 2020, AND NASA IS PLANNING TO REPLACE IT. AT PRESENT, ONLY HIGH TRL DEVICES BASED ON INFRARED ABSORPTION ARE CANDIDATE REPLACEMENTS, BECAUSE OF THEIR PROVEN LONG-TERM STABILITY, DESPITE THEIR SIZE AND POWER CONSUMPTION AND FAILURES IN THE PRESENCE OF LIQUID WATER. NO CURRENT COMPACT SENSOR HAS THE TOLERANCE FOR LIQUID WATER THAT IS SPECIFICALLY REQUIRED FOR A PORTABLE LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS (PLSS), AND NASA IS INVESTIGATING ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE ADVANCED EMU UNDER DEVELOPMENT. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS (IOS) WILL DEVELOP A LUMINESCENCE-BASED OPTICAL SENSOR PROBE TO MONITOR CARBON DIOXIDE, OXYGEN, AND HUMIDITY, AND SELECTED TRACE CONTAMINANTS. OUR MONITOR WILL INCORPORATE ROBUST CO2, O2, AND H2O PARTIAL PRESSURE SENSORS INTERROGATED WITH A COMPACT, LOW-POWER OPTOELECTRONIC UNIT. THE SENSORS NOT ONLY WILL TOLERATE LIQUID WATER BUT WILL ACTUALLY OPERATE WHILE WET, AND CAN BE REMOTELY CONNECTED TO ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY BY AN OPTICAL FIBER CABLE IMMUNE TO ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE. FOR SPACE SYSTEMS, THESE MINIATURE SENSOR ELEMENTS WITH REMOTE OPTOELECTRONICS GIVE UNMATCHED DESIGN FLEXIBILITY FOR MEASUREMENTS IN HIGHLY CONSTRAINED VOLUME SYSTEMS SUCH AS THE SPACE SUIT. IN PRIOR PROJECTS IOS HAS DEMONSTRATED A CO2 SENSOR CAPABLE OF OPERATING WHILE WET THAT ALSO MET PLSS ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL REQUIREMENTS. IN PHASE I, A NEW GENERATION OF CO2 SENSORS WAS DEVELOPED TO ADVANCE THIS SENSOR TECHNOLOGY AND FULLY MEET ALL NASA REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING SENSOR LIFE. IN PHASE II IOS WILL DEVELOP A NOVEL SENSOR SYSTEM WITH UNIQUE CAPABILITIES FOR INSPIRED GAS MONITORING, A UNIQUE TOOL FOR NASA SPACE SUIT DEVELOPMENT. THE PROPOSED EFFORT COULD LEAD TO AN ALTERNATIVE TO INFRARED ABSORPTION-BASED DEVICES FOR SPACE MISSIONS. IOS HAS ESTABLISHED COLLABORATION WITH RELEVANT PRIMES FOR NASA AND THE AERONAUTICS AND DEFENSE INDUSTRY FOR TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION. | ||||||||||||

NASA HAS IDENTIFIED OXYGEN, WATER, AND METHANE AS THE MOST CRITICAL ASSETS THAT COULD BE ACQUIRED BY MEANS OF IN-SITU RESOURCE UTILIZATION (ISRU). GIVEN THAT THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE IS 95.9% CO2, ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSING IS THE MOST FEASIBLE ISRU METHOD OF PRODUCING O2, H2O, AND CH4. THE MOXIE EXPERIMENT IS UNDERWAY TO DEMONSTRATE IN-SITU PRODUCTION OF O2 FOR PROPELLANT AND FOR BREATHING ON MARS (MARS 2020 ROVER). THE GAS PRODUCED BY ISRU CO2 PROCESSING NEEDS TO BE "COMPLETELY DRY" FOR CRYOGENIC LIQUEFACTION, AS TRACES OF RESIDUAL WATER CAN IMPEDE THE EFFICIENCY OF CRYOGENIC STORAGE AND COMBUSTION, BUT COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR MONITORING TRACES OF WATER IN "DRY" GASES ARE TOO BULKY AND COMPLEX FOR USE IN SPACE OR ON MARS. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS (IOS) WILL DEVELOP A COMPACT HUMIDITY MONITOR TO DETECT LOW PPMV OF WATER IN OXYGEN AND METHANE, DESIGNED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SPACE EXPLORATION AND OPERATION IN COMBUSTIBLE ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROPOSED MONITOR WILL INCORPORATE A NOVEL LUMINESCENT SENSOR ELEMENT, WHICH CONSISTS OF A LUMINESCENT INDICATOR DYE HIGHLY SENSITIVE TO WATER VAPOR, IMMOBILIZED IN A POLYMER SUPPORT. THE OPTICAL TECHNIQUE IS TIME-BASED, WHICH GIVES IT EXCELLENT RELIABILITY AND ACCURACY, AND AVOIDS THE DRAWBACKS OF INTENSITY-BASED MEASUREMENTS. IOS HAS DEVELOPED AND DELIVERED HUMIDITY SENSORS FOR NASA SPACE SUIT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, DEMONSTRATING OPERATION IN OXYGEN, NITROGEN, AND OTHER GASES, AND HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT IT CAN MONITOR LOW PPM OF WATER. IT WAS FOUND THAT A WASHING STEP USING L-GLUTATHIONE EFFECTIVELY RETURNED THE SENSOR SIGNAL TO BASELINE, BUT A WASHING STEP IS NOT FEASIBLE FOR CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT. THE REQUIREMENT FOR USING A CHELATION AGENT FOR SENSOR REVERSIBILITY WAS IDENTIFIED AS A KEY RISK OF USING THIS TECHNOLOGY AND GREATLY AFFECTED ITS FEASIBILITY FOR SPACEFLIGHT APPLICATIONS. THE SENSOR PROBES AND CABLES MUST NOT RESTRICT THE SUIT OR HUMAN SUBJECTS' MOBILITY, AND MUST NOT DISTURB THE GAS FLOW. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEM IS DEVELOPING LUMINESCENCE-BASED SENSING PATCHES FOR NON-INTRUSIVE MONITORING OF CRITICAL LIFE SUPPORT GAS CONSTITUENTS AND POTENTIAL TRACE CONTAMINANTS IN SPACESUITS. NASA HAS IDENTIFIED OXYGEN, WATER, AND METHANE AS THE MOST CRITICAL ASSETS THAT COULD BE ACQUIRED BY MEANS OF IN-SITU RESOURCE UTILIZATION (ISRU). GIVEN THAT THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE IS 95.9% CO2, ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSING IS THE MOST FEASIBLE ISRU METHOD OF PRODUCING O2, H2O, AND CH4. THE MOXIE EXPERIMENT IS UNDERWAY TO DEMONSTRATE IN-SITU PRODUCTION OF O2 FOR PROPELLANT AND FOR BREATHING ON MARS (MARS 2020 ROVER). THE GAS PRODUCED BY ISRU CO2 PROCESSING NEEDS TO BE "COMPLETELY DRY" FOR CRYOGENIC LIQUEFACTION, AS TRACES OF RESIDUAL WATER CAN IMPEDE THE EFFICIENCY OF CRYOGENIC STORAGE AND COMBUSTION, BUT COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR MONITORING TRACES OF WATER IN "DRY" GASES ARE TOO BULKY AND COMPLEX FOR USE IN SPACE OR ON MARS. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS (IOS) WILL DEVELOP A COMPACT HUMIDITY MONITOR TO DETECT LOW PPMV OF WATER IN OXYGEN AND METHANE, DESIGNED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SPACE EXPLORATION AND OPERATION IN COMBUSTIBLE ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROPOSED MONITOR WILL INCORPORATE A NOVEL LUMINESCENT SENSOR ELEMENT, WHICH CONSISTS OF A LUMINESCENT INDICATOR DYE HIGHLY SENSITIVE TO WATER VAPOR, IMMOBILIZED IN A POLYMER SUPPORT. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS (IOS) IS DEVELOPING A UNIQUE COATING IN WHICH FLUORESCENCE QUENCHING CAN FORM HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES OF THE TRUE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION ON SURFACES IN TRANSONIC FLOW IN OXYGEN-FREE ATMOSPHERES. THE FLUORESCENCE IN THESE UNIQUE COATINGS DEPENDS DIRECTLY ON ABSOLUTE PRESSURE, AND OXYGEN PERMEATION INTO THE COATINGS IS NOT REQUIRED. THE NEW COATING, HOWEVER, IS COMPLETELY COMPATIBLE WITH THE "LEGACY" (OXYGEN SENSING) VISUALIZATION EQUIPMENT USED IN CURRENT TRANSONIC TEST FACILITIES. WITH THIS NOVEL PRESSURE SENSING TECHNOLOGY, COATING MATERIALS CAN BE USED THAT ARE NOT USEFUL FOR OXYGEN-BASED PSPS, AND COATINGS THAT CAN MEET REQUIREMENTS NOT ACHIEVABLE WITH CLASSICAL PAINTS, LIKE OPERATION AT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURE OR IN HIGHLY CONTAMINATED ENVIRONMENTS. IN PHASE I, IOS HAS CREATED THE OXYGEN-INSENSITIVE PRESSURE SENSITIVE COATING MATERIALS, AND APPLIED THEM TO GLASS AND STAINLESS STEEL TEST COUPONS. THE FLUORESCENCE EMISSION LIFETIME AND INTENSITY OF THESE TEST SAMPLES WERE MEASURED AT VARYING STATIC PRESSURES UNDER PURE NITROGEN, SHOWING SIGNIFICANT CORRELATION WITH PRESSURE IN THE RANGE STUDIED (FROM 0.05 TO 14.7 PSI), AND EXCELLENT REPEATABILITY. THIS SETS THE STAGE FOR PHASE II DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF A COMPLETE TEMPERATURE-COMPENSATED TRUE AMBIENT PRESSURE SENSITIVE PAINT SYSTEM THAT CAN BE USED TO CHARACTERIZE FLOW AROUND STRUCTURES IN HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNELS. THOUGH SIGNIFICANT WORK HAS BEEN CONDUCTED TO DEVELOP SYSTEMS FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE SILVER IONS IN THE WATER SYSTEMS, THERE IS NO SENSOR FOR CONTINUOUS IN-LINE MONITORING OF THE CONCENTRATION OF SILVER IN THE WATER USED BY THE CREW, NOR A RELIABLE DEVICE TO ANALYZE SILVER IN SPACE. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS PLANS TO DEVELOP A LUMINESCENT INDICATOR-BASED OPTICAL SENSOR PROBE TO MONITOR SILVER CONCENTRATION DIRECTLY IN SPACECRAFT WATER SYSTEMS IN REAL TIME. THE PROPOSED SENSOR WILL BE BASED ON A TECHNOLOGY RECENTLY DEMONSTRATED BY IOS FOR MONITORING WASTEWATER IN SPACE SYSTEMS, IN WHICH A SPECIFIC INDICATOR DYE IS COPOLYMERIZED WITH A STABLE POLYMER MATRIX, RESULTING IN HIGHLY SENSITIVE AND STABLE SENSOR ELEMENTS. THE CAPABILITY OF INDICATOR-DOPED POLYMER MATRIXES TO DETECT SILVER IN THE ISS HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED BY NASA AND ITS PARTNERS, BUT FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE IN-LINE STAND-ALONE MONITORING. AT PRESENT THERE ARE NO RELIABLE, COST-EFFECTIVE PROCESS CONTROL TECHNIQUES TO MINIMIZE DEFECT PRODUCTION AND FOR QUALIFICATION OF FINISHED PARTS. STUDIES AT NASA, NIST, AND OTHER AGENCIES HAVE NOTED THIS GAP AND URGED INCREASED EFFORTS TO DEVELOP TECHNIQUES FOR PART QUALIFICATION. AT PRESENT, NO SUCH SENSOR TECHNOLOGY EXISTS THAT CAN SATISFY THE DEMANDING OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE ISS AND FUTURE EXPLORATION MISSIONS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS EFFORT IS TO INTEGRATE A SIMPLE, COST EFFECTIVE, AND COMPACT DETECTION PLATFORM WITH A CELL PHONE FOR HEALTH MONITORING AND DISEASE DIAGNOSIS FOR ASTRONAUTS IN SPACE. INTELLIGENT OPTICAL SYSTEMS (IOS) WILL BUILD UPON ITS EXPERTISE IN LATERAL FLOW ASSAYS (LFA) BY INTEGRATING THE LFA CASSETTE WITH A CUSTOMIZED CELL PHONE READOUT DEVICE TO QUANTITATIVELY MEASURE BLOOD-BASED BIOMARKERS. OUR INNOVATIVE AND EXTREMELY COST-EFFECTIVE MULTI-BIOMARKER LFA APPROACH IS EMINENTLY SUITED FOR SPACE TRAVEL. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE MATURE DEVELOPMENT OF A CELL PHONE-BASED LFA READER FROM HOLOMIC LLC, THE MANUFACTURER OF THE RECENTLY INTRODUCED HRDT-1 CELL PHONE-BASED RAPID DIAGNOSTIC TEST READER, WE WERE ABLE TO FURTHER CUSTOMIZE IT FOR CARDIAC AND LIVER FUNCTION PANELS (FIGURES 1 AND 2). HOLOMIC LLC WAS FORMED IN 2011 TO COMMERCIALIZE ADVANCED BIOPHOTONICS TECHNOLOGIES INVENTED AT THE WORLD-RENOWNED RESEARCH LABORATORY OF PROFESSOR AYDOGAN OZCAN AT UCLA. THE TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDE RAPID DIAGNOSTIC TEST READOUT; LENS-FREE HOLOGRAPHIC AND TOMOGRAPHIC MICROSCOPY; BRIGHT FIELD AND FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY; AND FLOW CYTOMETRY. OUR MONITOR WILL INCORPORATE ROBUST CO2, O2, AND H2O PARTIAL PRESSURE SENSORS INTERROGATED BY A COMPACT, LOW-POWER OPTOELECTRONIC UNIT. THE SENSORS WILL NOT ONLY TOLERATE LIQUID WATER BUT WILL ACTUALLY OPERATE WHILE WET, AND CAN BE REMOTELY CONNECTED TO ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY BY AN OPTICAL FIBER CABLE IMMUNE TO ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE. FOR SPACE SYSTEMS, USING THESE MINIATURE SENSOR ELEMENTS WITH REMOTE OPTOELECTRONICS PROVIDES UNMATCHED DESIGN FLEXIBILITY FOR MEASUREMENTS IN HIGHLY CONSTRAINED VOLUME SYSTEMS SUCH AS PLSS. OUR FLOW-THROUGH MONITOR DESIGN INCLUDES AN OPTICAL SENSOR WE HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED FOR PLSS HUMIDITY MONITORING, AND AN OPTICAL OXYGEN SENSOR WITH SIMILAR IOS TECHNOLOGY. IN PHASE I OF THIS PROJECT IOS DEMONSTRATED A CO2 SENSOR CAPABLE OF OPERATING WHILE WET, AND A MINIATURE PROTOTYPE PPCO2-H2O-O2 SENSOR PROBE WAS FABRICATED AND TESTED UNDER RELEVANT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.
